WHAT DOES YOUR HAT SAY ABOUT YOU?

Lagos Millennials and beyond are super into hats right now. Nailing the trend seems contingent upon one key thing: not trying too hard. The whole looks says, “I don’t care, I grabbed any hat I could find and I’m comfortable.” There has always been a trend with young people to dress like they're not concerned with their image when really that is the complete opposite. Amongst many young people, a hat is always a conscious decision to either complete a look or make a statement.

When a hat is an accessory to compliment an outfit, the rule is usually simple, you pick a hat that goes with your clothes or whatever trainers you have on. However, what you will notice in Lagos (and beyond) is that people subliminally use hats to communicate messages to others. It could be used as a way to raise awareness for a brand, show loyalties to a particular sports team or show a person's sense of humour with a slogan. The many messages that can be conveyed through a hat are endless.

Like clothes, hats make a personal statement and communicate what you represent. A cheeky message on a hat tells someone who you are before you get a chance to. Something as simple as a slogan, or symbol on a hat commentates to the world, how you live and what you believe in.  Whatever mood you represent, whatever emotion you're feeling, whatever political message you support can be communicated through your hat. Think about it for a second. We take hats for granted but wearing is a choice that is made with the intent and usually used to make a statement.

Let us start seeing hats as modern-day crowns, something to be celebrated and intentional about. There’s a sense of pride that comes with rocking the right hat, whether it's the current resurrection of dad caps, baseball fitted caps or old school snapbacks. Truth is truth: trends come and go but hats are here to stay. The rise of hip-hop and its influences on fashion and culture, in general, turned fitted hats into one of the all-time greatest fashion statements.
